Required equipment:
This course is designed to provide the kind of activities which will supplement introductory astronomy (NatSci-225).
Class time will be spent investigating:
Different kinds of telescopes, how to set them up and use them.
Astronomical coordinate systems, time keeping, and reading charts.
When, where and how to find and observe astronomical events and objects.
Making actual measurements of various astronomical quantities and use them to solve basic problems of astronomical theory.
A trip to the Manfred Olson Planetarium at UWM is scheduled for July 11th @ 8 pm. Your attendance is required.
We will also attempt to hold one session (at night) observing and identifying objects, using binoculars and a telescope. The time of this meeting will be determined later.
Grading Policy
Each meeting consists of two - 2 hour sessions
Basically your grade will be determined by class participation and projects done in class. You will be allowed to miss one (2 hour) session without penalty. Your grade will drop one grade for each (2 hour) session you miss thereafter. (see scale below)
