Answer question one (about Stem Cell Research) and any three of the remaining questions. Due date is next class period.

  1. Stem Cell Research has come to the forefront as an issue of major concern for scientists and the general population. Take one of the following positions and support your argument with a brief (about one half of a page). There is no right answer to this question. I just want you to think about the subject and support your stand on the issue.
    A.    Scientist who supports cloning in the interest of furthering scientific knowledge and understanding.
    B.    You refute the value of such experimentation based on religious grounds.
    C.    You represent a capitalist company that stands to profit a great deal.
    D.    You represent the federal government and must decide to support or oppose further cloning experimentation.
  2. Compare the processes of transcription and translation. Which organelles are involved in these processes? Include in your answer the roles of the various types of RNA.
  3. Write the sequence of the complimentary strand of DNA to the sequence A, G, C, G, A, T, T, G, C. A, T, G, C. What is the sequence of mRNA that would be transcribed from the given sequence?
  4. Explain why it is advantageous for a cell to store or secrete an enzyme in an inactive form?
  5. Transitional epithelium is an integral part of of the lining of the urinary bladder, ureters, and urethra. What common function or characteristic allows transitional epithelium  to accommodate these structures? (HINT: For example, what is happening to the bladder if you don't urinate for 8-10 hours?
  6. Describe the components of connective tissue or the categories of connective tissue and give examples of location and function of each type.
  7. Cancer causing agents (carcinogens) usually act on cells that are dividing. Which of the four tissues carcinogens most influence? Least influence? Why?
