1. List all of the functions of the skin. Describe how each function is accomplished.

2. You have heard the statement, "Beauty is only skin deep." Discuss the irony of this statement with respect to what you have learned about the layers of skin in this chapter.

3. Describe the accessory organs associated with the skin. Explain each of their functions.

4. Discuss the concept of heat production and loss. Include the terms radiation, conduction, convection, evaporation, and cellular respiration in your discussion.

5. Would there be a case in which hypothermia is intentionally induced? Define hypothermia.

6. Outline the steps that occur in skin wound healing.

7. What special problems would result from the loss of 50% of a person's skin surface? How might this person's environment be modified to compensate partially for this loss.

8. As a rule, a superficial partial-thickness burn is more painful than one involving deeper tissues. How would you explain this observation.
