Answer any four of the questions.

1. Describe the anatomy and physiology of a single muscle fiber by including the terms sarcolemma, sarcoplasm, myofibrils, myosin, actin, titin, sarcomere, sacoplasmic reticulum and transverse tubules.
2. Compare and contrast slow-contracting and fast contracting muscles. Discuss color, mitochondria and respiratory capacity in your answer.
3. Define twitch, latent period, period of contraction, period of relaxation, motor unit summation, and refractory period.
4. Compare and contrast the three types of muscles in terms of location, major function, cellular characteristics, mode of control and contraction characteristics.
5. Distinguish between twitch, summation, tetanus, and treppe (staircase effect).
6. Summarize the sliding filament theory of contraction. Be sure to include all of the correct terms and components.
