  1. Describe the types of neurons based on structure and on function. List a characteristic for each type.
  2. Describe the characteristics and function of each of the neuroglial cells.
  3. What might be deficient in the diet of a pregnant woman who is complaining of leg muscle cramping? How would you explain this to her?
  4. How would you explain the following observations?
    a.    When the nerve fibers of the leg are severed, the muscles they innervate become paralyzed; however, in time, control over the muscle often returns.
    b.   When motor neurons in the spinal cord are severed, the muscles they control become permanently paralyzed.
  5. Distinguish between the following:
    a.    myelinated and unmyelinated axons.
    b.    depolarizing and hyperpolarizing.
    c.    resting potential and action potential.
    d.    convergence and divergence.
    e.    action potentials and nerve impulses.
  6. How are multiple sclerosis and Tay-Sachs disease opposite one another?
  7. Describe a synapse. Include in your discussion synaptic transmission, synaptic potential, neurotransmitters, and neuropeptides. 
  8. Identify the components of a spinal reflex arc and describe the function of each component and the overall relationship of a reflex arc to homeostasis.

  9. Differentiate the ascending from the descending tracts. List the components and their functions.
