DIGITAL CRIME SCENE & EVIDENCE PHOTOGRAPHY
Course Description:
This 3-day hands-on course is designed for crime scene personnel who have the responsibility to
properly document crime scenes and physical evidence through photography. Attendees will
be provided with a thorough understanding of how to use various cameras modes, adjustments for various lighting conditions, use of flash, proper
exposure and composition, and improve their skills as photographers.
Specialized techniques such as timed photography, painting with light and surveillance photography will also be included.
Students with limited familiarity of photography along with those who have some experience taking photos but want to improve their skills and develop a better understanding of why and how to adjust camera settings will benefit. Attendees will be able to take the camera off the automatic settings and improve images needed for investigations and court.
Course Goals:
Upon completion, students will be able to operate their camera and flash in automatic, program and manual modes.
They will be able to photograph crime scenes and related evidence with proper exposure and composure. Students will be able
to improve the quality of photos and understand how to adjust for various conditions encountered at different scenes.
Required Equipment:
Students need to bring their digital SLR camera, normal lens approx 35-50mm or a zoom lens capable of that range (macro lens is optional), batteries/charger for camera & flash, digital media, off camera flash, remote cord (if available) to connect camera to flash, tripod (if available), flashlight and note taking materials. Instruction manuals for their specific camera and flash are highly suggested if available.
Course Objectives:
- Fundamentals of digital photography.
- Camera and lens functions & controls.
- Automatic, program modes and manual adjustments.
- Image size, quality and digital media (formats).
- Understanding of basic camera operations (shutter speeds, aperture, white balance, exposure adjustments, ISO, etc.)
- Meter usage and calculation of proper exposure.
- Flash techniques.
- Footwear evidence photography techniques.
- Time photography and painting with light techniques.
- Fields of view/composure: crime scene & evidence, accidents and injuries.
- Crime scene and evidence photographic documentation principles.
- Archiving digital images.
- Scene safety issues.
- Suggested camera equipment.
- Photography problem solving.
IMPORTANT: Print out the following TRAINING EXERCISES and bring to class. Black & White Print is fine, Color Print not necessary.
