DIGITAL CRIME SCENE & EVIDENCE PHOTOGRAPHY
Course Description: This 2-day hands-on course is designed for crime scene personnel who have the responsibility to properly document crime scenes, physical evidence, injuries and accident scenes through photography. Attendees will be provided with a thorough understanding of how cameras function, adjustments for various lighting conditions, proper exposure and composition, flash and non-flash photography and improve their skills as photographers.
Course Goals: Upon completion, students will be able to operate their camera and flash in automatic, program and manual modes. They will be able to photograph crime scenes and related evidence with proper exposure and composure. Students will be able to improve the quality of photos and understand how to adjust for various conditions encountered at different scenes.
Required Equipment: Students need to bring their digital camera (digital SLR preferred), lens, batteries, digital media, off camera flash with remote cord, tripod (if available), flashlight and note taking materials. Instruction manuals for their specific camera and flash are suggested if available.
Course Objectives:
- Fundamentals of digital photography.
- Camera and lens functions & controls.
- Automatic, program modes and manual adjustments.
- Image size, quality and digital media (formats).
- Understanding of basic camera operations (shutter speeds, aperture, white balance, exposure adjustments, ISO, etc.)
- Meter usage and calculation of proper exposure.
- Flash techniques.
- Footwear evidence photography techniques.
- Time photography and painting with light techniques.
- Fields of view/composure: crime scene & evidence, accidents and injuries.
- Crime scene and evidence photographic documentation principles.
- Archiving digital images.
- Scene safety issues.
- Suggested camera equipment.
- Photography problem solving.
Students can print black & white. Color is not necessary.
