Unit 5
Objectives
In this unit you will cover some of the bacteria that cause specific diseases and thus are of medical importance.
1. Identify the following characteristics of the organisms listed in objective 3:
- Gram’s stain and shape/arrangement
- Oxygen requirement, significant toxins or virulence factors
2. Identify the diseases caused by the organisms listed in objective 3:
- Include key characteristics such as Portal of entry (POE), Symptoms, Transmission/reservoirs
- Treatments, Prevention, Common & medical name
3. Required organisms are:
- Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus coagulase negative, Staphylococcus saprophyticus
- Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus), Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus), Streptococcus pneumoniae, Enterococcus
- Neisseria meningitidis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae
- Bacillus anthracis
- Clostridium tetani, Clostridium perfringens, Clostridium botulinum, Clostridium difficile
- Listeria monocytogenes
- Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae
- Corynebacterium diphtheriae
- Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium leprae
- Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae
- Salmonella typhi, Salmonella species
- Shigella species
- Brucella species
- Yersinia pestis
- Haemophilus influenzae
- Bordetella pertussis
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Francisella tularensis
- Legionella pneumophila
- Vibrio cholerae, Campylobacter jejuni, Helicobacter pylori
- Mycoplasma pneumoniae
- Treponema pallidum, Borrelia burgdorferi, Borrelia hermsii, Leptospira interrogens
4. Compare/contrast the “true” bacteria, Rickettsia, and Chlamydia.
- Discuss how obligate intracellular parasites are cultured.
- Identify the role of vectors in spreading rickettsial infections.
Readings: TALARO: Chapters 18, 19, 20, 21
Laboratory Activities and Objectives:
- Perform a Gram’s stain of an unknown culture. (REQUIRED SKILL)
- Identify genus and species of organisms studied from prepared microbiological slides.
- Interpret results of biochemical testing and describe the values of each test.
- Separate organisms from a mixed culture using the quadrant streak. (REQUIRED SKILL)
