Lab Exercises
To help learn the human body, I have
assigned a number of laboratory exercises found in your lab manual. These are
easy exercises that help you learn the material and get an easy ten points each
week. I have found that students who attend labs and who take time to perform
the lab exercises do very well in the course. I will let you know which sections
of the exercise need be done. See the above schedule for a list of exercises.
Exercises are due one week after the assigned date. Work turned in on time can
receive up to ten points. See criteria below. Worked turned in after the due
date can receive up to half credit if received within one week. Work turned in
later than one week late will not receive any points. Lab exercises are worth a
100 points of your grade. As you can see, there are twelve weeks of worth of
assignments. This means that you can earn up to twenty extra credit points if
you turn in all work. Points will be taken off for unexcused absences.
Criteria/lab assignment
Accuracy, Completion 0-10 points
Attendance 0-2 points
WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS
You will be required to turn in some
written homework each week. Keep in mind
that sometimes there may be no correct answer a question. In some cases
you may even give an incorrect answer and receive full credit. What I am looking
for is for you to support your answer intelligently. Since one of MATC’s CORE
ABILITIES is to communicate effectively, I ask that you proofread your
assignment correcting spelling and grammatical errors. Criteria are listed
below followed by an example of what two students answered for a critical
thinking question. Written home must be type written and can be turned in via
email or by bringing it to class. Do not infer that I know what you are trying
to say. Effective communication means that you fully explain your answer.
Criteria/ lecture assignments
Meaning: insight/depth of answer 0-4
points
Development: sufficient support
0-2 points
Organization: well developed
0-2 points
Grammar/Language
0-2 points
Examples of a question and answer:
QUESTION:
What events, discoveries, or
inventions were probably the most significant in the development of microbiology
and why? (10 points)
Example 1
Answer
The invention of the microscope
was probably the most important discovery. It allowed the observation of the
tiniest of organisms, blood, human tissue, insects, minerals and plants. Without
the microscope many people could have died not knowing which parasite or
bacteria was infecting there body.
The discovery of spores and sterilization-the word sterile meaning completely
free of all life forms including spores and viruses. The capacity to
sterlize
objects and materials is an absolutely essential part of microbiology, medicine,
dentistry, and industry.
The developement of Aseptic techniques aimed at reducing microbes in a medical
setting and preventing wound infections. It mainly involved disinfecting the
hands and the air with strong antiseptic chemicals, such as phenol, prior to
surgery.
All three of these help to keep the microorganisms under control, to help people
live longer and healthier lives, to have safer more effective
surgerys, with
more efficent health care.
Critique of
answer 1
The length is appropriate. There
are a few spelling errors (highlighted) and grammar that should have been cleaned up and the
last sentence is a fragment. However the student’s arguments were good and she
received 9 points and would have received 10 points had the spelling errors not
occurred.
Example 2
Answer
Microscope awareness of
widespread distribution of miroorganisms wouldn't possible without microscopes.
The establishment of the scientific method is the background of scientific
reasoning. This is the guideline that scientists follow.
Critique of
answer 2
This student provided a couple
of examples, but really did not back up his argument. Grammar is poor. He would have received
partial credit (5 points).
